How To Support Your Child's Practice Sessions:

As a music parent, you want to help your child succeed—but finding the balance between supportive and overbearing can be a challenge. With the right approach, you can be your child's biggest cheerleader while keeping their practice experience positive and stress-free.

The Stage Manager, Not the Director

We believe that the best way parents can set their child up for success is by helping them establish a consistent practice time, ensuring they have a distraction-free space, and making sure their instrument is accessible and in good condition. You're creating the conditions where practice can happen naturally. After that, it's up to them!

 Be Present

Younger children especially benefit from having you nearby during practice—but nearby doesn't mean that you have to be actively engaged. You might catch up on emails in the same room or read nearby, offering your presence as support. Your calm, non-judgmental company makes practice feel less isolating without adding performance anxiety.

Know When to Step Back

As students mature, they need increasing ownership of their practice routine. Gradually shifting responsibility to them—even if it means some inconsistent weeks—teaches them valuable self-management skills that they can carry into their schoolwork.
