November 2025 Newsletter

This month, we would like to honor Voyager piano and drum student Miles. Miles is not only an excellent instrumentalist, he is also an outstanding composer! Check out this video of Miles performing an original composition.

How old are you?
"I'm fourteen

What do you love most about your teacher?
"Where do I begin? My teacher, Max, is fantastic. One thing that I love about him is how he’s so accommodating of my interests; he’ll help me learn whatever songs I’ve been listening to, and he doesn’t just teach me which notes to play. He teaches me the theory of why they were written that way."

What is your favorite song or piece you've learned so far?
"My favorite piece that I’ve learned so far is Philip Glass’s 6th etude for piano. Its emotional intensity is unparalleled, and it’s really fun to play."

Who are your favorite musicians or bands?
"My tastes are very eclectic, but among my favorite artists are: Thomas Adès, Philip Glass, Ella Fitzgerald, Ryan Cunningham, Daniel Rotem, Boris, Jack Stauber, Meliton Soupelin, John Coltrane, Tolgahan Çoğulu, Pedestrian Deposit, Steve Reich, Nahre Sol, Mitski, Jon Batiste, Ravi Shankar, Natalie Cole, György Ligeti, Erik Satie, Tim Henson, George Antheil, Ornette Coleman, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Joshua Salzman, and Stephen Sondheim."

What do you love most about playing music?
"I love being able to create emotions in others with sound, lacking any sort of semantic value, only aesthetic."

You compose your own music. What gets your creative juices flowing?
"I'm currently writing a piano sonata, and I can say quite honestly that I have no idea where I get my inspiration. I could never be a professional composer; I'll go months without writing a single note before I get any sort of inspiration. What I've learned is not to force it and just be ready when it comes."

Open Mic Night Recap

On Sunday, November 9th, Voyager hosted a memorable open mic night! Students sat in front of a small crowd of encouraging family and friends as they performed a diverse range of music, from Adele to classical piano pieces and Broadway songs. Our open mic nights provide an opportunity for Voyager students to become comfortable performing in front of an audience in a low-pressure, cafe-style environment. We had twinkle lights, music-themed decorations, snacks, and lots of applause as our students wowed us with their talents.

We look forward to hosting many more open mic nights in the future!
